Surrendering your Parrot
Surrendering Your Bird to CWA
Surrendering a pet is never an easy decision. Please know that we pass ZERO judgment when you need to surrender your bird to CWA. In fact, it is the opposite. We appreciate the fact that you are looking out for your bird’s best interest by choosing to surrender your bird to a reputable rescue. There are so many reasons why people need to surrender birds and it is not our place to judge, it is our job to help the birds and we will do just that!
The first step is to contact us and fill out a surrender form. This form is lengthy, but very necessary as it gives us a lot of information about the bird you are surrendering. As soon as we receive your surrender form, we will contact you for a phone conference. During this call, we will ask more in depth questions about your bird and arrange for pick up. We DO NOT PAY FOR BIRDS! CWA is a 501c3avain rescue ran strictly on donations and fundraisers and furthermore, board members, volunteers, and fosters are NEVER paid. Why don’t we offer money for your bird? You paid money for your bird so why shouldn’t you charge CWA money to take your bird? Great questions. With the exception of some small bird species, CWA takes every bird we get in to the vet. This vet exam consists of a complete physical exam, fecal and blood chemistries. We test for Psittacine, Beak and Feather disease, Polyoma, and Chlamydia (Psittacosis). We also provide all food, toys, and appropriate sized cages for your bird. Everything mentioned above can get VERY expensive. We do have approximate adoption fees that vary per species but typically, we lose money on almost every bird that comes into rescue, which is why we are constantly fundraising and raising awareness for donations.
The process of finding a home for your bird is very in depth. We must first receive a clean bill of health for the bird from our vets. If the bird tests positive for any diseases we make that known to potential adopters. If the bird is sick in any way we follow all vet protocols and procedures to ensure we heal the bird before placing it up for adoption. The bird also spends a minimum of 30 days in quarantine and evaluation with an approved foster before it is placed up for adoption so we can evaluate behaviors and get to know the bird. We have an extensive adoption process that potential adopters must go through before they are approved as well.
Our surrender form has a spot for you to fill out if you would like to stay in touch with us during the adoption process for your bird. Our surrender form also has a spot where you can indicate whether you would like your bird to find a home or live in our aviary. We are currently in the planning process of building our aviary, so that is not an option at this time but it will be in the near future.
We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for trusting us to take care of your feathered family member.
