The Companion Parrot
So you have decided to jump into the Bird world! Congratulations! You should know your parrot’s diet is the center of their world. Species and knowing what to feed them is vital - for their overall health, and to help with their moods!
Veggies
Veggies should be the King of the food bowl for all parrots! A balance of vitamin A and calcium rich veggies will go along way with keeping your parrot healthy and balanced.
Fruit
Next, we add in fruit but we need to offer them the correct fruit as sugar and even natural sugar can make your bird form yeast . Yeast can cause your bird to have issues that you may or may not be able to see! That being said, stay away from high acidic fruit and grapes. Granny Smith apples and cantaloupe are good choices, and don’t forget to add berries! Fresh is best or freeze dried ( the only freeze dried food on the market we recommend is from www.myparrotopia.com. )
treats and nuts
Nuts should be limited yet added daily to most parrots diets -large macaws must have nuts daily! Almonds, walnuts , pine nuts , pistachios, Brazil nuts, hazel nuts, queen palm nuts! No peanuts ever! Macadamia nuts are reserved for hyacinth macaw and black palm cockatoo! ( they are extremely high in fat and the normal parrot doesn’t need that volume of fat intake )
Seeds
We try to stay away from sun flower seeds but a balanced seed mix can be important to aviary parrots and even other parrots however the seeds should be soaked for 8 to 10 hours, drained rinsed patted dry and fed - or you can sprout which changes fats into the vital plant proteins your birds need ! ( the only balanced bird seed mixes that are specifically blended for the wellness of your parrots is sold from birdieboxbirdtoys.com they also make the safest and best enrichment toys for your parrots along with calming blends that are entirely natural!
Commercial pellets
Commercial Pellets should be a portion of your parrots diet! We recommend Roudybush Daily Maintenance, or Zupreem Naturals , or Zupreem Fruit Blend though it has food grade dyes it is still nutritionally sound!
Remember what you feed is vital for the long life your parrot can live!
