The Application Process:
The very first step in adopting a bird from CWA is filling out an application. Once we receive your application, the board reviews the application and decides whether you are approved or denied to adopt a CWA bird. If your application is denied we will email you reasons as to what our concerns were and you can re-apply.
The Homecheck Process
If your application is approved, the next step is the home check. A volunteer or board member will come to your house (at an agreed upon time, of course) meet you and your family, discuss potential dangers or safety concerns in your home, and basic care needs like diet, food, exercise, and cage placement for your new family member. If we do not have a volunteer or board member in your area, we may ask you to send in a detailed home video and follow up with a conference call. We feel very strongly about the home check process because it helps us, help you set up both you and your feathered companion for many years of happiness and safety.
Candidate Selection
When CWA is surrendered birds, we place them in an approved foster home for a MINIMUM of 30 days. During this time, we take them to the vet for a well check and viral testing, evaluate their personalities and temperament, and begin transitioning them to a good diet. Once the foster period is complete, we begin reviewing interested potential candidates and deciding which family is the best fit for that bird. This process does take quite some time and MANY factors come in to play when we place a bird in a home. We always put the bird’s best interest FIRST.
On behalf of everyone at CWA we would like to thank you for choosing to adopt, and not shop. Adopting a bird from a rescue can be a very rewarding experience.
